First Entry

this is my first real experience with web-dev stuff. Today I pulled the trigger an finally bought a hosting solution and domain name. I have been thinking about doing this for a while, but didn’t know if I actually wanted to.

I am surprised at how sleazy the web hosting market is. Every company involved in this market has the practice of offering incredibly cheap promotional rates, then standard rates which are 2-5x more expensive. This puts me in a bind, because it incentivizes spending more money than I have up front. I ultimately decided to go with the absolute cheapest option I could find, for the longest time period I could afford (hence the .cyou extension).

It will be fun to get into some more web development type stuff. Right now, I github set up with a webhook which points to my website. Whenever I push a commit to my github repository, github will send an HTTP POST request to this website, telling it to update. This is all well and good, but I think I may want another way of submitting blog/religion entries. I’m not entirely sure of the best way to accomplish this, ideally it wouldn’t involve using github as an intermediary.

this task is further complicated by the fact that I am using emacs org mode. this allows me to write all of these posts in an ergonomic editor, with minimal formatting syntax, then export it to HTML that uses a stylesheet I created. I might be able to run the export software on the server, or find some other way to export and submit my documents. This certainly won’t be much of a priority anytime soon though, the github method works just fine, and I really want to spend some time learning Haskell.
